Depending on where a family is located, sometimes it comes down to what’s available to them, but what’s the difference between a charter public school and a traditional public school? While a TPS operates in a public school district, charter schools operate autonomously through individual agreements with state or local governments that dictate rules and performance standards.
Stanford University released As a Matter of Fact: The National Charter School Study III 2023, a study focusing on student performance in charter and public schools. Throughout this report, charter schools surpassed TPS in both reading and math. This analysis is broken down into charter school performance in 31 states and one on charter school networks in 26 states.
Based on year-to-year national academic progress from the 2014-15 school year to the 2018-19 school year, charter school students outpaced their TPS peers in both reading and math learning gains. In a year, charter school students had 16 days of additional learning in reading and six additional days of learning in math.
Meanwhile, the Concept Schools Model provides an extended school day with an extensive yearly calendar. We accelerate learning by differentiating instructional practices, which helps identify learning gaps.
Compared to their TPS peers, urban charter school students had 29 additional days of growth per year in reading and 28 additional days of growth in math, both of which were significant.
On average, students enrolled in a Concept Charter public school demonstrate 1.2 years of academic growth for each school year enrolled.
When we look deeper into these results to determine if all students benefit, we find not only positive total results but also positive results across races and ethnicities. Black and Hispanic students in charter schools excel more than their TPS peers by large margins in math and reading.
Also, charter schools associated with charter management organizations like Concept Schools outperform stand-alone charter schools.
